The forgotten victims of gun violence

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, large metropolitan areas account for more than two-thirds of deaths by gun violence each year, with inner cities most affected. The majority of the victims are young, ranging in age from their early teens to mid-20s... more info

The global traffic in guns is complex.

Huge supplies of guns pass legally from nation to nation. After the Cold War, armies in both the East and the West were reduced, and governments gave or sold excess equipment to friends and allies. According to a writer at the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, Norway, since 1995 the United States alone has given away more than 300,000 rifles, pistols, machine guns, and grenade launchers. It is reasoned that giving weapons away is cheaper than dismantling or storing and guarding them. Some analysts estimate that perhaps three billion dollars worth of small arms and light weapons legally cross national borders each year.

The illegal trade, however, may be much larger. Black-market weapons usually have to be purchased. In some African wars, paramilitary groups have bought hundreds of millions of dollars worth of small arms and light weapons, not with money, but with diamonds seized from diamond-mining areas. The New York Times commented: Where governments are corrupt, rebels are pitiless and borders are porous . . . The glittering stones have become agents of slave labor, murder, dismemberment, mass homelessness and wholesale economic collapse. How ironic that a gemstone traded for assault rifles may later be sold in an elegant jewelry boutique as an expensive symbol of eternal love!

Weapons are also linked to the illegal trade in drugs. It is not unusual for criminal organizations to use the same routes to smuggle drugs in one direction as they use to smuggle guns in the other. Weapons thus have become a virtual currency, bartered for drugs.

THE world today is infatuated with violence.

Music: Songs featuring increasingly violent lyrics have moved into the mainstream of the music industry, says the above source. Using filthy language, some songs glorify murder and rape, even of wives and mothers.

Video Games: The uncomfortable fact is, videogames have an unhealthy obsession with bloodshed, stated a British magazine for video-game enthusiasts. It added: To some degree, a love of videogames demands a love of violence. For example, one popular game enables players to simulate beating women to death with baseball bats. Some authorities believe that video games, being interactive, may have a more powerful negative influence on children than TV does.

Exposure to violent video games can desensitize individuals to real-life violence, say research psychologists at Iowa State University, U.S.A. Previous studies showed that exposure to such games increases aggressive thoughts, angry feelings, physiological arousal and aggressive behaviors. This study monitored the heart rate and emotional response of participants to filmed episodes of actual violence shown to them immediately after they had played either violent or nonviolent video games. The results showed that those who play violent video games habituate or get used to all the violence and eventually become physiologically numb to it.

Based on a study of 600 young video-game players, researcher Brent Stafford, of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, warns that many games are training our kids to celebrate violence. Macleans magazine reports: Some hard-core players who prefer the most violent and realistic games kill as many as 1,000 avatars (on-screen characters) in a single night, often in scenes of gory realism. The research documented the extent to which violent video games are designed to appeal to a players emotions and to engulf young minds in worlds that desensitize them to violence, even killing. The video-game industry, at $17 billion a year, is bigger than film and television combined. Stafford urges parents to know what games their children are playing and to be alert to any tendency toward compulsion.

Movies: Studies show that violence, sex, and profanity have increased significantly in movies, and ratings may not be a reliable guide. Moreover, it is not just the bad guys who are violent. Nearly half the violence depicted on TV, in movies, and in music videos is committed by the good guys, according to one study.

News: If it bleeds, it leads is the guiding principle for many TV-news producers. News is big business, and newsmen know that violence attracts viewers and that high viewer ratings attract advertisers, who finance TV programming in many lands.

Web Sites: Both virtual and real-life images of torture, dismemberment, mutilation, and murder are available on the Internet. Many children visit these sites.

Growing number of people with Mental Disorders

The presence of a mental disorder may not be immediately diagnosed. Friends and family members might attribute the symptoms to hormonal changes, physical ailments, personality weaknesses, or the result of difficult circumstances. Some parents had seen some prior signs of trouble before they happen, but have thought that their childs moodiness was part of an adolescent phase that would soon pass. However, significant changes in sleep, diet, or behavior may indicate something more serious. An examination by a professional can lead to effective treatment and improved quality of life for your loved one.

What about the over drugging of our childern?:

Psychiatrists may then prescribe psychotropic drugs for the children without first without making it clear to parents that these medications can have severe side-effects including insomnia, loss of appetite, headaches, psychotic symptoms and even potentially fatal adverse reactions

"Our society viewed with loathing those who 'pushed' stimulant drugs on children," says child psychiatrist Dr Peter Breggin. "Yet today, there are more children taking Ritalin and amphetamines from doctors than ever received them from illegal pushers," he says.

Gary Null - The Drugging of Our Children

Gary Null examines the increasingly common practice of prescribing psychotropic drugs for children - including preschoolers as young as age 2 to 4 - who have been diagnosed with ADD, or ADHD.

Families need to help one another

Today many children are victims of family breakup. Others have parents who have little time for them. Thousands of young ones have grown up with inadequate moral and family guidance. Some experts feel that such an environment may result in childrens not developing the ability to bond well with others, thus making it easier for them to commit crimes against fellow humans, often without remorse.

With 20 children among 26 victims of Connecticut school shooting. How can we make sure that this kind of a thing does not happen again.

Who is to Blame

Is hollywood to blame? Was the shooter on drugs? Bad Parenting? Was he seeing a Doctor? What kind of music was he listing to? There are a lot of people who believe that permissive methods of child rearing have allowed children too much freedom. This, they feel, has led to an increase in crime and drug use. A survey in the United States revealed that nearly 70 percent of respondents thought that children and young people do not get as much parental direction as they need. When trying to explain school shootings and other terrible crimes committed by teenagers, many blame lax parental control.

Worldwide Problem

A report published by the World Health Organization states that violence leaves no continent, no country and few communities untouched.

Even places that were considered relatively safe in past years have recently seen more instances of senseless acts of violence. For example, Japan has long had a low rate of violent crime. However, in Ikeda, in June 2001, a man carrying a butcher knife walked into a school and began stabbing and slashing. Within 15 minutes he killed 8 children and wounded 15 others. When this is added to other reports from Japan, such as those of young people killing total strangers just for the thrill of it, one gets the clear sense that things have changed.

Even in countries where crime rates have been high, certain senseless acts have caused public revulsion. This was true after the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center in New York. Psychologist Gerard Bailes made this comment: It turns the world into a totally alien, dangerous place in which we cannot predict what is going to happen.
